i cleaned up my tv
tl;dr:my mi tv came with tracking, ads, and a laggy home screen. i removed 29 apps over wifi in about ten minutes. no root needed.
i saw this post from ryan doyle and wanted the same thing for my tv.
Hacked my TV with Claude Code today
Ryan Doyle (@doooyle) October 16, 2026
No more ads, bloatware, spyware or laggy UI
I also got a beautiful screensaver with my revenue, calendar, weather, and notifications for new Stripe payments
It was super easy! I sent it the listing for my tv, asked "can you hack this?" And it talked me through how
my mi tv was slow. the home screen was full of sponsored rows, xiaomi was quietly sending usage data home, and there were apps on it i had never opened. so i sat down with claude code and cleaned it up.
no root, just adb.
android tvs have a hidden developer mode. go to settings, then device preferences, then about, and click build seven times. then turn on usb debugging in the new developer menu. on mi tvs this also lets you connect over wifi.
adb connect 192.168.0.111
the tv asks if it should trust your computer. say yes.
back up first.
before touching anything i saved the full list of apps.
adb shell pm list packages > packages-backup.txt
120 apps. most of them keep the tv running. some really don’t.
sort them.
i put every app in one of three piles. safe to remove, depends on what i use, and do not touch. the do not touch pile is big. the mediatek apps run the hdmi ports, the tuner and the picture. google play services runs most of the rest.
the safe pile had things like
com.miui.tv.analyticsandcom.xiaomi.statistic, which is xiaomi’s trackingfusion.android.tv.demo, the store demo modecom.mitv.tvhome.michannel, the sponsored content rowcom.mitv.tvhome.atv, which is patchwall, the laggy xiaomi home screencom.xiaomi.mitv.updateservice, the thing that pushes xiaomi updates
disable, then uninstall.
i disabled everything first so i could undo it in one command.
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.miui.tv.analytics
once the tv still worked fine, i uninstalled them for my user.
adb shell pm uninstall --user 0 com.miui.tv.analytics
this doesn’t wipe the app from the system. it just removes it for you, so a factory reset brings everything back. that’s a nice safety net.
29 apps gone.
i restarted the tv to check nothing came back. nothing did. it went from 120 apps to 91 and feels quicker. no sponsored rows, no xiaomi tracking, no patchwall.
then i used the clean slate to build my own screensaver. that’s a post for another day.
